A Review of 2016
2016 has been an exciting year for our project, Raising the Velo Roof, and we’re looking forward to seeing the efforts of this year come to fruition in 2017!
Over the last couple of months, we’ve been busy behind the scenes putting in place the groundwork to manage the project as well as promoting the project to the general public and working to secure sponsorship and finance.
We were working under the umbrella of Wanganui Events Trust but have now formed an independent charitable trust with one clear objective – to put a roof on our wonderful velodrome. This will streamline the decision-making process and make it easier to raise funds, with clear focus and accountability.
We have been working closely with Whanganui District Council to establish a memorandum of understanding around the management of the construction process and also to secure all the necessary resource consents before building work can commence. This is going well and the project is currently in the public notification phase of resource consent.
During November and December, we were busy promoting the project, showing off the architectural model of the dome as well as a section of the roof membrane at the Saturday River Market. We had fantastic feedback from the public and felt a huge level of support among locals.
The Prime Minister (John Key) came to visit in August, thanks to the tireless efforts of Chester Borrows, and gave us a strong indication that significant central government funding would be available. Chester has continued to advocate for the project during this transitional time for the government to ensure that the project is kept at the centre of attention at cabinet level.
Finally, our most exciting news yet, we are now are in discussions with a major naming-rights sponsor! Fingers crossed and watch this space!
A Big Thanks!
As we go into 2017, we’d like to extend our thanks to all those that have supported us along the way, both financially and with your encouragement. An extra big thanks to those members of the 5000 Club whose pledges demonstrate to local, regional and central government that there is real grass-roots support for putting a roof on our Velodrome to create a stunning regional facility and that local people are prepared to put their money where their mouth is and step up for their community.
