Whanganui Goes to Cambridge!!

On Sunday 6th December we headed to the Cambridge Avantidrome to explore the venue, get a taste of a cycling World Cup in action and to soak up the atmosphere at the kind of event we hope to bring home to Whanganui.

Walking down the concrete bunker-like corridor to emerge within the heart of the circular velodrome, cyclists whizzing past us at unfathomable speeds, was an experience to remember. This is what we’d come for, to get a sense of the spectacle, the atmosphere that having a roofed velodrome can create by providing a World Cycling Event.

Among the sporting elite, were rowing greats and Olympians Eric Murray and Hamish Bond. We told them of our quest to roof our own velodrome and they responded with words of encouragement. We managed to grab a shot of ourselves and the Olympians including their Olympic Gold Medal and the Halberg Trophy!

We had a friendly catch-up with Andrew Matheson, CEO of Cycling NZ, who once again expressed his support for the project. Overall it was a great day out, resulting in the fires burning brighter in our bellies with enthusiasm and passion to get our very own velodrome roofed.
